Assalam-alaikam Sis,
a proper punjabi dish. I have never tried these, but mum makes them by soaking them in tamarind overnight to reduce the bitterness and then slitting and stuffing them with mince. Tastes really good. Also tastes good with lamb, except the combined "heat" of the meat and karela will give you a hot flush.

Did you manage to get the children to eat them?
